How to install a new business energy meter
To begin to intstall a new business energy meter, we would advise you to go to your local distributor and ask them to install a meter at your premises, and enter a contract with them. Once you are on supply and have a Supply Number, our energyhelpline business team can search the whole of the market for a better deal. CLICK HERE to compare and switch your business energy.
To begin you’ll need to find out a couple of things about your business property and what your business will need from it’s energy supply. You can look to your landlord, local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) or the National Grid for this type of information.
To get an electricity meter fitted you need to have an MPAN (this is also called a Supply Number).
You might already have one, which your landlord or local DNO can tell you. If you havent got one already you can request a new one from the DNO.
When do you need the new meter?
It’s recommended that you begin this process early – around a month before you need your supply to begin. Try to request the installation of the meter in plenty of time so you’re not left without a supply.
The meter will normally be fitted within 10 to 15 working days of your request.
You need to consider when your business is likely to use most energy and what times and days you won’t be using much. Its also worth considering if you want a longer fixed tariff or something shorter.

There will be a ‘Available Supply Capacity’ attached to your meter which gives the amount of electricity you are able to draw from the grid at any one point. This is measured in Kilo Volt Amperes (KVA). This amount should be agreed in the connection agreement which is created between you and your installer during the process of arranging your meter installation.
If your Available Supply Capacity is above 70KVA, you’ll probably need an advanced energy meter which sends real-time usage data to your supplier every half hour (half hourly meters – click here for our guide on this).
