Why should you compare business electricity deals?

Business and domestic energy contracts are completely different, but they do share one thing in common. If you don’t shop around and compare business electricity rates to see what other suppliers are offering, then you will most likely be paying way too much for gas and electricity.

Your business energy will always be completely different to your domestic deal and you will pay a different price for each. If you run a bigger business, you may also find that you are charged a half an hourly rate, or you may need to have different meters installed.

But just because you’ve been with the same supplier for as long as you can remember, it doesn’t mean that they are providing the cheapest or best deal for you. Comparing business electricity quotes is the only thing that will make sure you’re paying the correct rates.

If you have never negotiated a better price with your existing supplier, then you may have automatically been put on their most expensive out of contract rates.

Running a business electricity comparison is the simplest way to find out if you are on the best contract.

At Energy Helpline, we do all the hard work for you and compare business gas and electricity prices online from a panel of trusted UK suppliers.  We then provide you with a list of the most competitive rates and helps you select the best deals to make sure you’re not paying over the odds for business electricity or gas.

Why should you switch business electricity suppliers?

Switching business energy suppliers is the quickest way to save your business money and time, without having an impact on the overall running of your business. You’ll be able to carry on as normal knowing that you’ll soon be saving money each month, with no corners cut in terms of the quality of your service or product.

The thing to remember when comparing prices is that every business is different, which means even two businesses that appear to be the same on the surface could end up paying different rates. This is because things like the location on your business and the energy efficient of your building all affect the rates you pay. In addition, bigger premises with more staff may have a larger energy consumption.

The reason there are so many different energy deals out there is to make sure that there is one to suit each specific business energy consumption model.

There are so many options out there meaning you can choose if you’d like a flexible or fixed rate and protect yourself against price hikes in the future. A flexible contract means that you can switch tariffs with only 30 days’ notice. A contract, however, is where you’ll have to give at least months’ notice if you want to swap suppliers.

If you haven’t researched deals before you swap or have stuck with the same supplier since you started the contract, then you may be paying way more than you should for business gas and energy.

These are all things to consider when thinking about switching. If you’ve never switched before, the process can be daunting, but it doesn’t need to be with Energy Helpline – we can quickly compare rates and talk you through your options.

How much should you be paying for business electricity?

As mentioned before, all businesses are different and have differing needs, which further highlights the need to find a deal that suits your individual business needs best.

A lot of things go into making up your business electricity bill but there are two specific things you need to consider:

  • The Unit Cost, which is the price you pay for each unit of electricity you use (measured in kWh).
  • The Standing Charge, which is a daily fee that covers the maintenance of the national grid and what it costs to transport gas to your business.

For a rough estimate of how much your business (depending on size) should be paying for energy on average each month, see the table below.

H3 – Average business electricity rates

Micro business16.6p – 18.0p25.0p – 32.5p
Small business16.2p – 17.7p25.0p – 34.5p
Medium business16.0p – 17.0p25.0p – 33.8p

Will you need to get a commercial electricity meter?

If your business surpasses 100kva of electricity every half an hour, then you will need to have an electricity meter installed. If the amount you use is lower than 70kva then you can decide, weigh up the pros and cons and make a decision on what would be best for your business.

When you switch suppliers, you probably won’t need to worry about having a meter installed unless,as stated above, your business uses a certain amount of electricity.

Some businesses with lower energy usage decide to have an HH meter installed as it helps with monitoring energy and can be beneficial to some companies.

How much could you save when you compare business electricity prices online?

It depends on how big or small your business is and how much energy you use on average as to how much you’ll save. Things like the size of the premises, the number of employees you have, and your overall energy efficiency all add up to decide how high or low your bills will be.

But if you never shop around then you won’t know how much money you’ll be saving, so it’s always a good idea to see what is currently on offer to you.

Can you compare prices if you work from home?

Working from home has become the norm over the past year, but you won’t be able to enroll on a business electricity contract unless more than 50% of your electracy use is strictly for business.

There’s no harm in checking though as some suppliers have a lower threshold, less than 50% and you may be eligible. If not though, then our experts can check to see if you’re on the most beneficial domestic deal and save you money there.

What happens when you switch business electricity suppliers?

Once we have collected a list of the very best energy quotes for your business, we’ll send you them and you can select the deal that suits you best.

We will then contact the new supplier and arrange a date when the changeover will take place. It’s quick and easy and there will be no need for new installation at your business premises.

All you’ll have to do is take a reading on the switch day and pay any outstanding bills. You may also have to take part in a credit check, depending on your history.
